David Brower Center
Designed for a site across the street from the University of California, Berkeley, and named after the first Executive Director of the Sierra Club, The David Brower Center is planned as a hub of the environmental movement. The mixed-use project plans for 33,000 square feet of office and educational space for environmental non-profits, as well as public education space, a restaurant, underground parking and scores of apartments.

Environmental technologies and architectural elements related to siting, daylighting, natural ventilation, structure, photovoltaic power generation, and solar hot water could qualify the building for a Platinum LEED rating. Some of these features include:
  • A dramatic public rotunda that provides daylight and natural ventilation
  • Windows that use a new form of light-redirecting glass to project outside sunlight across the ceilings, such that the second floor of offices will be passively lit to the full depth of the structure.
  • Natural ventilation
  • Photovoltaic cells on the roof that will reduce energy consumption to minimal levels
  • Eco-friendly and recycled construction materials that minimize the structure’s ecological footprint.
Ground-breaking for the David Brower Center is scheduled for April of 2007.
