Focus on advanced sustainable electrical concepts and lighting technologies continues to gain Integrated Design Associates recognition among architectural industry peers
June 10, 2009
SAN JOSE, CA - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Integrated Design Associates (IDeAs) today announced that two of its portfolio projects have been selected by the American Institute of Architects and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) as among 2009’s Top Ten outstanding examples of environmentally responsible architecture and design, Gish Family Apartments and the Portola Valley Town Center. IDeAs will be placing these COTE awards alongside its 2008 COTE placard for Nueva School Hillside Learning Complex.
“We are thrilled to be recognized by the AIA.” comments IDeAs principal David Kaneda. “In sum, the projects we have contributed to that have been awarded COTE Top Ten recognition represent a good mix of what IDeAs can do. For Nueva and Portola Valley Town Center, IDeAs was the electrical engineer of record, and for Gish Apartments we contributed daylighting and lighting design work.”
Gish Family Apartments in downtown San Jose is a 35-unit transit-oriented family apartment complex that provides quality affordable housing for households earning 35%–50% of the area median income. The complex includes efficiency, two-bedroom, three-bedroom apartments. Over a third of the apartments (13 of them) are set aside for residents with developmental disabilities. The complex is a model for the State of California's Multifamily Housing Program for mainstreaming special needs populations.
The Portola Valley Town Center replaced three town structures—a library, community hall, and town hall—that sat on top of the San Andreas fault. The new project, set on a surplus public school site, replaced these buildings and turned the old site into a park and play fields. The library contains reading rooms, a children's area, staff offices, and a room devoted to town heritage. The town hall houses the administrative offices; building, planning, and engineering departments; and the town's emergency operations center. The community hall provides a large divisible multi-purpose room, two activity rooms, storage, and a catering kitchen.
Nueva School is a private K-8 school serving 370 students. The Hillside Learning Complex includes three buildings—a library and media center, a student center, and a classroom building with administrative offices, seven classrooms, and an R&D lab—which are organized around a central plaza.
