Shares podium with owners of two IDeAs portfolio projects: StopWaste's Green Building in Alameda County and The David Brower Center

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Integrated Design Associates (IDeAs) received the USGBC Northern California Chapter’s Green Groundbreaker Award this evening at a ceremony at the California Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate Park. The event drew together some eight hundred people, including politicians, green building leaders and corporate supporters. While IDeAs was formerly recognized for the IDeAs Z2 Design Facility, California's first net-zero energy/zero-carbon commercial building, it is also noteworthy that the Electrical Engineering and Lighting Design Firm was on the building project teams of two of the other three honorees? StopWaste's Green Building in Alameda County and The David Brower Center.

The David Brower Center in Berkeley received the USGC chapter's recognition for a structure and a project team that showed great vision and best practices in green building. IDeAs shared in this Green Team Award as it served as electrical engineer on the project which comprises 33,000 square feet of office and educational space for environmental non-profits, as well as public education space, a restaurant, underground parking and scores of apartments. The mixed-use project is now under consideration for a LEED-Platinum rating. The David Brower Center in Berkeley received the USGC chapter's recognition for a structure and a project team that showed great vision and best practices in green building. StopWaste.org received the Community Service Award for its great strides in reducing waste generated during construction and by occupants of existing structures. An operation that combines two public agencies—the Alameda County Waste Management Authority and the Alameda County Source Reduction and Recycling Board? stopwaste.org focuses on reducing the waste stream for Alameda County. Through its popular website, it extends its knowledge base and programs to businesses, property managers and owners of green buildings well beyond its home county. IDeAs served as both electrical engineer and lighting designer on the project that converted an existing building in downtown Oakland into the StopWaste Headquarters, the first building in California to earn LEED® Platinum.

The David Gottfried Special Achievement Award was given to Anthony Bernheim of AECOM, a green building pioneer specializing in integrated building practices and indoor air quality.

"U.S. Green Building Council - Northern California Chapter is proud to recognize the outstanding achievements of these pioneers of sustainability," said Dan Geiger, the chapter's executive director. "Our awardees demonstrate the vision, creativity and leadership that typify our region's culture of innovation, and they point the way to greening a new economy."

The evening’s keynote was given by Steve Westly, former State Controller and Chief Financial Officer of California and Managing Partner of The Westly Group, a clean tech investment firm. He called for the passage of climate change legislation and encouraged the green building community to help “usher in a whole new world.”
